We service the ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic fitted to most automatic BMWs since 2010 and to many Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo and Maserati models: new pan and filter, the correct ZF fluid by part number, dynamic fluid exchange and an adaptation reset. From £399, priced to your car.
The ZF 8HP is an eight-speed torque-converter automatic, first fitted in 2009 and now in most rear- and four-wheel-drive automatic BMWs, the larger Audis with the tiptronic, most Jaguars and Land Rovers, the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio, Maserati's saloons and SUVs and the Toyota GR Supra. It is a very good gearbox. It is also one that was often sold as filled for life, which is why so many reach us at 80,000 miles on their original fluid.
The fluid in an 8HP lubricates the gears and clutches, cools the gearbox and carries the hydraulic pressure that makes every gear change. As it ages, changes get slower and less precise. The gearbox's control unit learns around the wear, so the first thing most owners notice is a thump into Drive, a slurred change when cold or a shudder under light throttle. Left long enough, worn fluid is harder on the clutches inside the gearbox and on the torque converter.
The work completed goes into the record we email you, and your next gearbox service is noted against your car.
From £399, priced to your car. Fluid quantity, the pan and filter part and access all differ between models, so we confirm a fixed price in writing from your registration before any work begins.
Earlier BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and Audi models used the six-speed ZF 6HP. Four-cylinder Audis and most VW Group cars use a DSG or S tronic dual-clutch gearbox, which we cover on our VAG and DSG page. For an overview of every gearbox we service, see transmission servicing.
Not sure which gearbox your car has? Send us the registration and we will check it for you.
The Rootes Standard
Not extras, and not only on the big jobs. This is how every car is looked after at Rootes Motors, from an oil service to a gearbox.
You get a fixed price in writing before any work begins. If we find anything else, we send you photos and a link to approve or decline it — nothing extra is done without your yes.
12-month warranty on parts we supply (wear items and consumables excluded), and every job is road-tested and checked before handover.
A seat cover, steering-wheel cover and floor mat go into every car before we touch it, and we work in clean overalls — never in a customer's car in dirty clothes.
On a while-you-wait job you sit in a warm, dry waiting room with a coffee — not stood outside in the cold and rain.
Booking is paperless. Every job is recorded against your car, and we email you the documents confirming the work completed.
Every registered customer gets automatic service and MOT reminders by email, so a due date never slips past.
We arrange your MOT at the DVSA-approved test centre on our street, take the car there and back, and fix anything that fails.
FAQ
No. Many cars left the factory with no fluid change on the schedule, but the fluid still ages with heat and mileage. We recommend a fluid and filter service on an 8HP every 60,000 to 80,000 miles, and sooner on a car that tows, is tuned or is driven hard. On a car with an unknown history, do it now.
From £399, priced to your car. The price moves with how much fluid your gearbox holds, the pan and filter part for your model and how much has to come off to reach it. Give us your registration and we confirm a fixed price in writing before we start.
We renew the pan and filter, then use our dynamic transmission fluid exchange machine to replace the fluid trapped in the torque converter, cooler and valve body as well. A drain-and-fill on its own only renews part of the fluid in the system.
The fluid ZF or the car maker specifies for your exact gearbox — ZF LifeguardFluid 8 or the maker's own approved equivalent — identified by part number for your car, never a 'universal' ATF.
Often it helps, particularly with an adaptation reset afterwards, because tired fluid and old learned values are a common cause. It is not a cure for a mechanical or electrical fault. We road-test with live data before and after, so if the problem is something else you know what it is rather than guessing.
Plan on leaving the car with us for a morning or an afternoon. If you would rather wait, there is a warm, dry waiting room with coffee.

CVT fluid does more than lubricate: it sets the grip of the belt or chain and carries heat away. Here is what it does and the signs a CVT needs attention.
Most garages offer a DSG drain-and-fill and call it done. The problem is that a drain-and-fill only replaces around half the fluid in the system. Here is what is actually inside a DSG, why the fluid matters, and why a dynamic exchange is the correct service for most cars.
