BMW X5 ZF 8HP gearbox oil change — Milton Keynes
Every X5 since the F15 is automatic with the ZF 8HP. It is a heavy car that often tows, which is exactly the use ZF says calls for an earlier oil change.
From £399, priced to your car. Get a price first — send the registration and we confirm the gearbox.
Which BMW X5 cars have the ZF 8HP
Gearbox versions are as published by the car maker, ZF and the sources below. We confirm your car's exact gearbox from its VIN before ordering parts.
What to know about the 8HP in a BMW X5
- ZF says its oil should be changed sooner than 150,000 km in high-temperature, high-load use — and towing with a two-tonne SUV is exactly that. On an X5 that tows, we advise a service sooner than our usual 60,000 to 80,000 miles.[6]
- On the facelifted G05 every engine is at least a mild hybrid, with a 48V electric motor living inside the eight-speed gearbox. We confirm the pan, fluid and procedure for that gearbox by part number before quoting.[5]
- BMW stopped offering a manual X5 with the second generation, so every F15 and G05 is an automatic.[3]
What the service includes
- Road test with live data before we start and again before handover
- New sump pan with its built-in filter, ordered by your car's VIN
- The fluid specified for your gearbox, by part number
- Dynamic fluid exchange — torque converter, cooler and valve body, not just the pan
- Level set at the temperature the gearbox calls for, read from live data
- Adaptations reset, leak check, and the work recorded against your car
Each step is explained on our ZF 8HP gearbox service page. Is the oil really for life? Our guide Is ZF 8HP gearbox oil really lifetime fill?quotes ZF's own figure.
ZF 8HP or ZF 6HP? The six-speed ZF 6HP came before it — for the BMW models with the 6HP, see BMW 3 Series E90, BMW 5 Series E60 and BMW X5 E70. We confirm which one your car has from its VIN.

Questions we get asked
How often should the gearbox oil be changed on an X5 that tows?
ZF's own fluid data sheet gives 150,000 km (about 93,000 miles) as its recommendation for an oil change, and says it should be sooner with high temperatures, heavy loads or an unknown history. An X5 that tows a caravan, horsebox or trailer is in that group, so we advise sooner than our usual 60,000 to 80,000 miles, judged on how the car is used and its history.
Can you service the gearbox on an X5 45e or 50e hybrid?
Yes. The hybrid's electric motor is part of the eight-speed gearbox. We identify the exact gearbox and pan from your VIN, follow the procedure for that version and reset it with BMW ISTA afterwards.
Does the X6 have the same gearbox?
The X6 is built on the X5's platform and is listed with the same 8HP family. Send us the registration and we will confirm the gearbox and price for your car.
How much is a ZF 8HP gearbox service on a BMW X5?
From £399, priced to your car. The price moves with which 8HP version it has, the pan and filter part and how much has to come off to reach it. Give us your registration and we confirm a fixed price in writing before we start.
