We service the ZF 6HP six-speed automatic fitted to BMW E-series cars, Jaguar, Land Rover and Audi quattro tiptronic models: new pan and filter, the correct ZF fluid, dynamic fluid exchange, and the connector sleeve that commonly leaks. From £399, priced to your car.
The ZF 6HP is a six-speed torque-converter automatic, first fitted in 2001 and used through the 2000s and into the 2010s across BMW's E-series cars, most Jaguars and Land Rovers of the period, and Audi's quattro tiptronic models. Plenty are still on the road and plenty are still on their original fluid, because these cars were sold as filled for life. Most of them now are older, higher-mileage cars, which is exactly when the fluid matters.
The work completed goes into the record we email you, and your next gearbox service is noted against your car.
From £399, priced to your car. We confirm a fixed price in writing from your registration before any work begins, and if a connector sleeve or other leak needs fixing we price that first, separately.
Later BMWs, Jaguars, Land Rovers and larger Audis moved to the eight-speed ZF 8HP. Audi and VW dual-clutch gearboxes are on our VAG and DSG page, and every gearbox we service is listed under transmission servicing.
Not sure which gearbox your car has? Send us the registration and we will check it for you.
The Rootes Standard
Not extras, and not only on the big jobs. This is how every car is looked after at Rootes Motors, from an oil service to a gearbox.
You get a fixed price in writing before any work begins. If we find anything else, we send you photos and a link to approve or decline it — nothing extra is done without your yes.
12-month warranty on parts we supply (wear items and consumables excluded), and every job is road-tested and checked before handover.
A seat cover, steering-wheel cover and floor mat go into every car before we touch it, and we work in clean overalls — never in a customer's car in dirty clothes.
On a while-you-wait job you sit in a warm, dry waiting room with a coffee — not stood outside in the cold and rain.
Booking is paperless. Every job is recorded against your car, and we email you the documents confirming the work completed.
Every registered customer gets automatic service and MOT reminders by email, so a due date never slips past.
We arrange your MOT at the DVSA-approved test centre on our street, take the car there and back, and fix anything that fails.
FAQ
It is common and usually cheap to fix: the connector sleeve where the wiring passes into the gearbox has seals that harden with age. It matters because a slow leak lowers the fluid level, and a ZF 6HP run low on fluid can damage itself. We renew the sleeve and set the level properly — ideally alongside a fluid service.
We recommend every 60,000 to 80,000 miles, sooner if the car tows or works hard. Most 6HPs we see are well past that on their original fluid, because the cars were sold as filled for life. With an unknown history, do it now.
From £399, priced to your car. The fluid quantity, the pan and filter part and any extra work such as a connector sleeve all vary by model. We confirm a fixed price in writing from your registration before we start.
Yes. The sump pan and filter are renewed every time — together where the filter is built into the pan — and then our dynamic exchange machine replaces the fluid in the torque converter and cooler as well.
Often it improves them, especially with an adaptation reset afterwards. If the cause is a worn mechatronic unit or torque converter, fluid will not cure it — but we road-test with live data before and after, so you find out which it is before spending money on parts.
Plan on leaving the car with us for a morning or an afternoon. If you would rather wait, there is a warm, dry waiting room with coffee.
