Land Rover Discovery 3 and 4 ZF 6HP gearbox service — Milton Keynes
The Discovery 3 and the Discovery 4 up to 2013 use the ZF six-speed automatic: the 6HP26 on the Discovery 3 and the 2.7 TDV6, the 6HP28 on the 3.0 TDV6 and V8. We renew the pan and filter, exchange the fluid and reset the adaptations — worth doing on a car that tows.
From £390, priced to your car. Get a price first — send the registration and we confirm the gearbox.
Which Discovery 3 and 4 cars have the ZF 6HP
- Discovery 32005–2009
- Automatic versions (standard on the V8, optional on the diesel). 6HP26 X.[1, 2, 3]
- Discovery 4, 2.7 TDV62009–2010
- 2.7 TDV6 automatic. 6HP26.[1]
Gearbox versions are as published by the car maker, ZF and the sources below. We confirm your car's exact gearbox from its VIN before ordering parts.
What to know about the 6HP in a Discovery 3 and 4
- The 3.0 SDV6 Discovery 4 from 2012 has the eight-speed ZF 8HP70 instead — see our ZF 8HP Discovery page. We confirm which one your car has from its VIN.[1]
- ZF singles out towing as one of the conditions that ages its gearbox oil faster — and a lot of Discoverys tow.[3]
- ZF calls its automatics maintenance-free in normal use, but recommends an oil and filter change after 50,000 to 75,000 miles because the oil wears — and it ages faster with towing, high speeds or hard driving. Most of these cars are older than that on their first fill.[3, 4]
What the service includes
- Road test with live data before we start and again before handover
- New sump pan and filter (together where the filter is built into the pan), ordered by your car's VIN
- The fluid specified for your gearbox, by part number
- Check of the connector sleeve where the wiring enters the gearbox — the common 6HP leak — quoted before any repair
- Dynamic fluid exchange — torque converter and cooler, not just the pan
- Level set at the temperature the gearbox calls for, adaptations reset, leak check, and the work recorded against your car
Each step is explained on our ZF 6HP gearbox service page.
ZF 6HP or ZF 8HP? The eight-speed ZF 8HP replaced it in later cars — for the Land Rover models with the 8HP, see Range Rover Sport, Range Rover, Land Rover Discovery and Land Rover Defender. We confirm which one your car has from its VIN.

Questions we get asked
Does my Discovery 4 have the six-speed or the eight-speed?
Discovery 4s with the 2.7 or 3.0 TDV6 or the 5.0 V8 have the ZF six-speed. The 3.0 SDV6 from 2012 has the eight-speed 8HP70. Send us your registration and we confirm it before quoting.
We tow a caravan with our Discovery 3. Does that change anything?
Yes, it makes the service more worthwhile. ZF says its gearbox oil ages faster with towing. We recommend changing the fluid and filter at the early end of our usual 60,000 to 80,000 miles on a car that tows.
Can you do it at the same time as other work?
Yes. A gearbox service fits alongside a main service or air suspension work. Tell us everything when you book and we price it all up front.
How much is a ZF 6HP gearbox service on a Discovery 3 and 4?
From £390, priced to your car. The price moves with which 6HP version it has, the pan and filter part and how much has to come off to reach it. Give us your registration and we confirm a fixed price in writing before we start.
