Which Land Rover Discovery cars have the ZF 8HP
Gearbox versions are as published by the car maker, ZF and the sources below. We confirm your car's exact gearbox from its VIN before ordering parts.
What to know about the 8HP in a Land Rover Discovery
- Land Rover fitted the eight-speed ZF to every Discovery from the 2014 model year (deliveries from November 2013). Earlier Discovery 3 and 4 models use the ZF six-speed — see our ZF 6HP page.[1, 3]
- Every Discovery 5 engine is paired with the ZF eight-speed automatic.[4, 5]
- ZF's data sheet says the oil should be changed sooner than 150,000 km with high temperatures and loads. Towing a caravan or horsebox is that kind of use.[6]
What the service includes
- Road test with live data before we start and again before handover
- New sump pan with its built-in filter, ordered by your car's VIN
- The fluid specified for your gearbox, by part number
- Dynamic fluid exchange — torque converter, cooler and valve body, not just the pan
- Level set at the temperature the gearbox calls for, read from live data
- Adaptations reset, leak check, and the work recorded against your car
Each step is explained on our ZF 8HP gearbox service page. Is the oil really for life? Our guide Is ZF 8HP gearbox oil really lifetime fill?quotes ZF's own figure.
ZF 8HP or ZF 6HP? The six-speed ZF 6HP came before it — for the Land Rover models with the 6HP, see Range Rover L322, Range Rover Sport L320 and Discovery 3 and 4. We confirm which one your car has from its VIN.

Questions we get asked
Is my Discovery 4 an eight-speed or a six-speed?
Land Rover moved every Discovery to the ZF eight-speed for the 2014 model year, with UK deliveries from mid-November 2013. Earlier cars are six-speed. Send us the registration and we will confirm it.
How often should a Discovery that tows have its gearbox oil changed?
ZF recommends an oil change after 150,000 km (about 93,000 miles), and sooner with high temperatures, heavy loads or an unknown history. For a Discovery that tows regularly we advise sooner than our usual 60,000 to 80,000 miles, judged on how it is used and its history.
Can you do the transfer box and differentials too?
Yes. They have their own oils, separate from the gearbox. Ask when you book and we will price them together.
How much is a ZF 8HP gearbox service on a Land Rover Discovery?
From £399, priced to your car. The price moves with which 8HP version it has, the pan and filter part and how much has to come off to reach it. Give us your registration and we confirm a fixed price in writing before we start.
