Range Rover ZF 8HP gearbox oil change — Milton Keynes
The L405 Range Rover and the current L460 both use the ZF eight-speed 8HP, with a low-range transfer box behind it. We service the gearbox properly — pan, filter, a full fluid exchange and an adaptation reset — priced to your engine.
From £399, priced to your car. Get a price first — send the registration and we confirm the gearbox.
Which Range Rover cars have the ZF 8HP
Gearbox versions are as published by the car maker, ZF and the sources below. We confirm your car's exact gearbox from its VIN before ordering parts.
What to know about the 8HP in a Range Rover
- On the current Range Rover every engine is mated to ZF's eight-speed torque-converter automatic, with a low-range transfer box for off-road use.[5]
- The L405 diesel hybrid uses a 35 kW motor-generator in place of the torque converter, so its gearbox service is different. We confirm the procedure and parts for it before quoting.[6]
- The 8HP variant depends on the engine and the year, so the pan and filter are ordered by your car's VIN.[2, 7]
What the service includes
- Road test with live data before we start and again before handover
- New sump pan with its built-in filter, ordered by your car's VIN
- The fluid specified for your gearbox, by part number
- Dynamic fluid exchange — torque converter, cooler and valve body, not just the pan
- Level set at the temperature the gearbox calls for, read from live data
- Adaptations reset, leak check, and the work recorded against your car
Each step is explained on our ZF 8HP gearbox service page. Is the oil really for life? Our guide Is ZF 8HP gearbox oil really lifetime fill?quotes ZF's own figure.
ZF 8HP or ZF 6HP? The six-speed ZF 6HP came before it — for the Land Rover models with the 6HP, see Range Rover L322, Range Rover Sport L320 and Discovery 3 and 4. We confirm which one your car has from its VIN.

Questions we get asked
Does my older Range Rover have the eight-speed?
The L405 (2013 on) does, and the last L322 models (2011–2012) are listed with the 8HP too. Send us your registration and we will confirm the gearbox.
Do you service the transfer box at the same time?
We can. The transfer box has its own oil, separate from the gearbox. Ask when you book and we will price both together.
How long does a Range Rover gearbox service take?
Plan on leaving it with us for a morning or an afternoon. We road-test with live data before we start and again before handover.
How much is a ZF 8HP gearbox service on a Range Rover?
From £399, priced to your car. The price moves with which 8HP version it has, the pan and filter part and how much has to come off to reach it. Give us your registration and we confirm a fixed price in writing before we start.
