Is ZF 8HP gearbox oil really lifetime fill?
Many BMWs, Jaguars, Land Rovers, Audis and Alfa Romeos with the ZF eight-speed automatic have no gearbox oil change on the service schedule. ZF's own fluid data sheet still recommends one. Here is what it says, and when to have it done.
By Rootes Motors
The ZF 8HP is the eight-speed automatic in most automatic BMWs, the larger Audis with the tiptronic, most Jaguars and Land Rovers, the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio, Maserati's saloons and SUVs and the Toyota GR Supra. Many of those cars left the factory with no gearbox oil change on the service schedule. So owners reasonably ask: is the oil in an 8HP really filled for life?
The short answer
The oil is filled at the factory to last a long time, but ZF, the company that makes the gearbox, still recommends changing it. ZF's own product data sheet for LifeguardFluid 8, the fluid made for the 8HP, says:
"ZF automatic transmissions are generally filled with lifetime oil. However, due to the many factors influencing the service life of transmissions in individual operation, ZF recommends an oil change after 150,000 km for its transmissions."
150,000 km is about 93,000 miles. The same data sheet goes on:
"In operating conditions with high temperatures and loads, or with unknown vehicle use in the past, it can make sense to change the transmission oil at shorter intervals."
Earlier ZF advice was shorter still: in 2015, ZF guidance quoted in the trade magazine Professional Motor Mechanic recommended transmission oil and filter changes after 50,000 to 75,000 miles.
Why "lifetime" and "change it" are both true
"Lifetime" describes what the fluid is expected to survive in normal use. It does not mean the fluid stops ageing. Every heat cycle wears the additives in the oil a little, and the clutches inside the gearbox shed fine material into it. The gearbox's control unit learns around the change, so the decline is gradual and easy to miss.
The ZF data sheet's own exceptions — high temperatures, heavy loads, unknown history — describe a lot of real cars: anything that tows, a tuned or hard-driven car, a heavy SUV, and almost every used car bought without a full history.
What tired 8HP fluid feels like
- Harsh, slow or slurred gear changes, especially when cold
- A thump when you select Drive or Reverse
- Hunting between gears or hesitating at low speed
- A shudder under light throttle as the torque converter locks up
- A gearbox warning or limp mode
None of these proves the fluid is the cause. They are also signs of mechanical and electrical faults, which is why a fluid service should start and end with a road test on live data.
When we recommend doing it
We recommend a fluid and filter service on an 8HP every 60,000 to 80,000 miles, and sooner on a car that tows, is tuned or works hard. That sits between ZF's older 50,000 to 75,000 mile advice and the 150,000 km figure on the current data sheet, and inside the shorter intervals the data sheet itself allows for heavy use. If you have bought a car with an unknown gearbox history, do it now rather than wait for a symptom.
What a proper 8HP service involves
On the 8HP the filter is built into the plastic sump pan, so a proper service renews the whole pan, not just the oil. ZF also says only the approved oil may be used for an oil change, and that the change must follow ZF's own procedure — so the fluid should be identified by part number for your exact gearbox, never a "universal" ATF. The level is then set at the fill plug with the engine running and the oil at the temperature the gearbox calls for.
At Rootes Motors we also use our dynamic fluid exchange machine to renew the oil held in the torque converter, cooler and valve body, which a drain alone leaves behind, then reset the gearbox's adaptations so it relearns on fresh fluid. The full procedure, the list of cars fitted with the 8HP and the price are on our ZF 8HP gearbox service page — from £399, priced to your car and confirmed in writing before we start.
