BMW 5 Series ZF 8HP gearbox oil change — Milton Keynes
The automatic F10 5 Series has the ZF 8HP, and every G30 has one. A 520d or 530d on its original fluid at 80,000 miles is exactly the car this service is for: new pan and filter, a full fluid exchange and an adaptation reset.
From £399, priced to your car. Get a price first — send the registration and we confirm the gearbox.
Which BMW 5 Series cars have the ZF 8HP
Gearbox versions are as published by the car maker, ZF and the sources below. We confirm your car's exact gearbox from its VIN before ordering parts.
What to know about the 8HP in a BMW 5 Series
- On the F10, anything from the 528i upwards was automatic only, and many 520d and 525d cars were ordered with the eight-speed too.[3, 6]
- When buying a used F10, Autocar's advice is to check for jerky low-speed changes and shuddering on automatic cars — the symptoms an old-fluid 8HP shows first. We road-test with live data before and after, so you know whether fluid is the cause.[6]
- Every G30 and G31 engine drives through the ZF eight-speed.[5]
What the service includes
- Road test with live data before we start and again before handover
- New sump pan with its built-in filter, ordered by your car's VIN
- The fluid specified for your gearbox, by part number
- Dynamic fluid exchange — torque converter, cooler and valve body, not just the pan
- Level set at the temperature the gearbox calls for, read from live data
- Adaptations reset, leak check, and the work recorded against your car
Each step is explained on our ZF 8HP gearbox service page. Is the oil really for life? Our guide Is ZF 8HP gearbox oil really lifetime fill?quotes ZF's own figure.
ZF 8HP or ZF 6HP? The six-speed ZF 6HP came before it — for the BMW models with the 6HP, see BMW 3 Series E90, BMW 5 Series E60 and BMW X5 E70. We confirm which one your car has from its VIN.

MOT arranged on our street
We arrange your MOT at the DVSA-approved test centre on our street, take the car there and back, and fix anything that fails.
Questions we get asked
My F10 520d shudders when pulling away gently. Will a gearbox service fix it?
Often it helps, because tired fluid and old learned values are a common cause of low-speed shudder on an 8HP. It is not a cure for a worn torque converter or a mechanical fault. We record live data before we start and road-test again afterwards, so if the cause is something else you know what it is.
Is the 530d gearbox different from the 520d's?
Usually, yes: the six-cylinder cars use a larger 8HP variant with its own pan and filter part. That is why we price from your registration and order parts by your car's VIN.
Can you do the 530e plug-in hybrid?
Yes. The hybrid's gearbox is still an 8HP; we read and reset it with BMW ISTA and confirm the fluid and pan by part number for your car before we start.
How much is a ZF 8HP gearbox service on a BMW 5 Series?
From £399, priced to your car. The price moves with which 8HP version it has, the pan and filter part and how much has to come off to reach it. Give us your registration and we confirm a fixed price in writing before we start.
