Aisin automatic gearbox service — Volvo, Peugeot, Citroën, Land Rover, Mini

We service Aisin torque-converter automatics, the six- and eight-speed gearboxes in Volvo, Peugeot, Citroën, Land Rover Freelander 2 and Mini: a static service (correct fluid, filter, level set at temperature, adaptation reset) from £399, or a dynamic fluid exchange from £799.

Aisin makes the automatic in a lot of cars that do not say so

Aisin (Aisin AW, also written Aisin Warner) builds torque-converter automatics for many makers, so the gearbox in a Volvo, a Peugeot or a Freelander 2 often has an Aisin code on it rather than the car maker's name. The same family of gearbox can turn up in cars from different makers, which is why we order fluid and parts by the gearbox, not the badge on the bonnet.

What we see on these gearboxes

  • Tired fluid. Harsh low-speed changes, a thump into gear and a shudder as the torque converter locks up are typical of old fluid and stale learned values.
  • Leaks. Sump pan seals and the gearbox's electrical connector can weep with age, lowering the fluid level.
  • Worn parts. Slipping or flaring that a service does not cure points to something inside the gearbox. We tell you that before quoting a repair.

How we service an Aisin automatic

  1. Identify the gearbox and the fluid by part number, because the families take different fluids.
  2. Road test with live data first, noting how it changes, the fluid temperature and any stored faults.
  3. Pan off and filter renewed where the design allows, with a new seal and bolts where specified.
  4. Fill, or dynamic exchange. The static service refills with the correct fluid. The dynamic fluid exchange runs our machine through the cooler circuit, so the fluid in the torque converter is renewed as well as what drains from the pan. How the dynamic exchange works →
  5. Level set by the method the gearbox calls for, with the fluid at the specified temperature, read from live data.
  6. Adaptations reset, then a second road test with live data and a leak check before handover.

The work completed goes into the record we email you, and your next gearbox service is noted against your car.

Price

Static service from £399: the correct fluid, the filter where the design allows and the level set at the correct fluid temperature. Dynamic fluid exchange from £799: all of that plus our machine through the cooler circuit. Both are priced to your car, and we confirm a fixed price in writing from your registration before any work begins.

What you get on every job

Not extras, and not only on the big jobs. This is how every car is looked after at Rootes Motors, from an oil service to a gearbox.

  1. Fixed price in writing before we start

You get a fixed price in writing before any work begins. If we find anything else, we send you photos and a link to approve or decline it — nothing extra is done without your yes.

  2. 12-month warranty on parts we supply

12-month warranty on parts we supply (wear items and consumables excluded), and every job is road-tested and checked before handover.

  3. Covers on, clean overalls, every car

A seat cover, steering-wheel cover and floor mat go into every car before we touch it, and we work in clean overalls — never in a customer's car in dirty clothes.

  4. A warm, dry waiting room with coffee

On a while-you-wait job you sit in a warm, dry waiting room with a coffee — not stood outside in the cold and rain.

  5. Paperless, with every job on record

Booking is paperless. Every job is recorded against your car, and we email you the documents confirming the work completed.

  6. Automatic service and MOT reminders

Every registered customer gets automatic service and MOT reminders by email, so a due date never slips past.

  7. MOT arranged on our street

We arrange your MOT at the DVSA-approved test centre on our street, take the car there and back, and fix anything that fails.

Questions we get asked

Which cars have an Aisin automatic gearbox?

Aisin supplies torque-converter automatics to many makers. The ones we see most are in the Volvo XC60 and V70, second-generation Peugeot 308 and Citroën C4 Picasso, the Land Rover Freelander 2 and the Mini Cooper automatic. Send us your registration and we confirm what yours has.

How often should an Aisin automatic's fluid be changed?

We recommend around every 60,000 miles on average, sooner for towing, short trips and stop-start driving. Many of these gearboxes were treated as filled for life, so a car with an unknown history should have it done now.

How much does the service cost?

A static service is from £399 and a dynamic fluid exchange is from £799, both priced to your car. Fluid capacity and parts differ between the gearboxes, so we confirm a fixed price in writing from your registration before we start.

Is my Aisin gearbox a CVT or dual-clutch?

Not if it is one of the automatics on this page, which are conventional torque-converter automatics. CVTs and dual-clutch gearboxes need their own fluid and procedure, and we tell you which you have when you send your registration.

Will a fluid change fix a gearbox that is shifting badly?

Sometimes. Old fluid and stale learned values often cause harsh changes, and a service with an adaptation reset often helps. It will not fix a worn mechanical part, so we road-test with live data first and tell you what we find before any work.

Can I wait while you do it?

Plan on leaving the car with us for a morning or an afternoon. If you would rather wait, there is a warm, dry waiting room with coffee.
