Field report — read through
Many Volvos are kept for years and cover big mileages, so the jobs that come up are often the long-term ones: cambelts on the diesels, gearbox fluid that was sold as "for life", and the electrics of a well-equipped car. We service, diagnose and repair the V40, V60, V70, V90, S60, S90, XC40, XC60 and XC90 at our workshop in Bletchley, Milton Keynes, to the manufacturer schedule, with the service book stamped. The five-cylinder D5 diesels (2.4 litre) use a cambelt. Its interval is a mileage and an age figure, and a car that has covered few miles can still be overdue. When we change it we look at the parts that go with it, including the water pump, tensioner and idlers, so you do not pay for the same access twice. If there is no proof of the last change, assume it is due.
The four-cylinder Drive-E engines vary by engine, so we do not guess: tell us the registration and we will confirm whether yours has a belt or a chain, and what is due. Timing work is on our engine repairs page.
Many Volvos use an Aisin automatic gearbox. A flare between gears, a harsh shift or a delay selecting drive is the usual sign that it needs attention. Our automatic gearbox service page covers what we do.
On the Recharge and T8 plug-in hybrids we work on the conventional parts of the car only. We do not work on high-voltage batteries or high-voltage systems.

Yes. Many Volvos use an Aisin automatic. Our in-house dynamic fluid exchange machine replaces the old fluid with the correct type for your gearbox, and a gearbox service is from £399, priced to your car.
On many Volvos with an Aisin automatic, a flare or a harsh shift can be a sign that the fluid has aged or the gearbox needs its adaptations checked. It is worth diagnosing before it gets worse. We read the gearbox data, then advise whether a fluid service is the right first step.
