Field report — read through
Fiestas, Focuses, Corsas, Astras, 208s, C3s, Clios, Sportages and Tucsons make up a big share of what is on the road around Milton Keynes. Several popular small petrol engines use a cambelt that runs in oil, a "wet belt". The best known are Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost and the 1.2 PureTech used in many Peugeots, Citroëns, DS models and newer Vauxhalls. These belts are sensitive to the wrong oil and to missed services: a degrading belt can shed material into the oil and starve the engine. Some small petrol engines, including Vauxhall's 1.2 and 1.4 non-turbo engines of the late 2000s and 2010s, are known for timing chain stretch. A rattle on start-up is the sign to have it checked. Clutches are a common job on every make here; our clutch replacement is from £799, priced to your car.

A wet belt is a cambelt that runs inside the engine, bathed in oil, instead of behind a cover. Ford's 1.0 EcoBoost and the 1.2 PureTech petrol engine in many Peugeots, Citroëns and Vauxhalls use one. The belt is sensitive to the wrong oil and to missed services. Tell us your registration and we will confirm whether yours has one and when it is due.
An interim service is from £169 on engines up to 2.0 litres, a full service from £229 and a major service from £329. If you just need oil and a filter, our oil service while you wait is from £149 with oil and filters included.
The exact approval the manufacturer specifies for that engine, for example PSA B71 on many PureTech engines and the Ford WSS approval for EcoBoost. On wet-belt engines the wrong oil is one of the causes of belt degradation, so this is not a place to approximate.
On some of Vauxhall's small petrol engines, a short rattle on a cold start is the classic sign of timing chain stretch. It should be checked rather than left, because a stretched chain can jump a tooth. We read the cam and crank timing data and listen at the engine before quoting.
