Alfa Romeos reward correct servicing and punish guesswork. The engines are good, but several of them depend on the right oil, a belt changed on time and a gearbox fluid that was never really "for life". We service, repair and diagnose Alfa Romeos at our workshop in Bletchley, Milton Keynes, and owners also come to us from Bedford, Northampton, Aylesbury and Buckingham.
We work on the whole range, including the MiTo, Giulietta, Giulia, Stelvio, Tonale, 159, Brera, GT and 147, and we are happy to talk through anything older or rarer, a 4C included. Everything below is written as what we check and what owners should know, so you can walk into a conversation with any garage, including us, with the right questions.
Every service we do is matched to the manufacturer schedule for your car: the right oil to the right approval, correct filters from reputable suppliers, and a proper inspection of brakes, suspension, cooling and tyres. For the MiTo and Giulietta, our Alfa annual service is from £199, including the MultiAir oil gauze filter. For other models, interim services start from £149, full from £229 and major from £329 (see our servicing page for the engine-size prices). If you only need oil and a filter, our oil service while you wait is labour from £89 plus oil and filters, with a free diagnostic scan and a waiting area on site.
Servicing at an independent garage does not on its own change your manufacturer warranty, provided the service follows the schedule, uses suitable parts and is recorded. Keep the invoices, and ask us to update the service history.
The 1.4 MultiAir in the MiTo and Giulietta (and the related 0.9 and 1.4 engines across the wider group) opens its intake valves with a hydraulic actuator that uses engine oil as its working fluid. That has two practical consequences for owners.
First, use the oil the manufacturer specifies and change it on time. Old, thickened or wrongly graded oil is the most common reason the valve control starts to misbehave. Second, the oil feed to the MultiAir unit passes through a fine gauze filter, so contamination in the oil or a skipped service can restrict it. Rough running, hesitation on a cold start and a warning light after a long gap between services are all reasons to book a diagnostic check rather than guess at parts. Our diagnostics start from £75.
Many Alfa petrol and diesel engines are belt driven, including the 1.4, the 1.75 TBi, the 2.2 JTS and the JTDm diesels. The replacement interval is both a mileage and an age figure and varies by engine and year, so check the schedule for your exact car, or give us the registration and we will confirm it. A car that has covered few miles can still be overdue on age.
When we replace a cambelt we look at the parts that go with it: the water pump (usually driven by the same belt), tensioner and idler pulleys, and any accessory belt. Changing these together costs far less than paying for the same access twice, and it removes the awkward case where a worn pump takes out a new belt. If you have bought an Alfa with no proof of the last belt change, assume it is due and get it checked. A cambelt and water pump on the 1.4 MultiAir or T-Jet is from £399. See our repairs page.
The older 2.0 Twin Spark and 2.0 JTS engines, found in cars such as the 147, GT and 156-era models, are known for a rattle at start-up caused by wear in the variable cam timing (variator) assembly. A short rattle on a cold start is the classic sign. It does not always mean the engine is about to fail, but the cause should be identified, because correct oil and an unworn variator both matter for the engine's long-term health. We would rather tell you what is worn and what it will cost than quote a repair for a noise.
The ZF 8-speed automatic fitted to many Giulias and Stelvios is a very good gearbox, but it is often described as filled for life. In practice the fluid ages, and independent specialists commonly recommend changing it at a sensible interval rather than waiting for a fault. If your car has an unknown history, or is approaching a higher mileage, a fluid service is one of the cheapest ways to protect it. Our transmission servicing starts from £220, and we can talk you through what your gearbox calls for.
Alfas are driven enthusiastically, and the brakes show it. We offer a free 15-minute brake check while you wait, with pads from £119 per axle, and any work is a fixed price confirmed before we start. Aircon is the same: older cars typically use R134a and newer ones R1234yf, so we confirm which yours takes before quoting. See our aircon service, with regas from £79 (R134a) or £149 (R1234yf).
For warning lights, drivability faults and anything where the cause is not obvious, we start with diagnostics so that the repair is based on evidence. If the MOT is due, we do not test it ourselves, but we can arrange it with the test centre on our street, pre-check the car and fix anything that fails.
We are at Unit 7 Rootes Works, Tavistock Street, Bletchley, Milton Keynes MK2 2PF, an independent workshop for owners across Milton Keynes. Call 07746 922 273 or get a quote online. See the other makes we work on on our makes page.

Under the UK's block exemption rules, having a car serviced at an independent garage does not by itself void a manufacturer warranty, as long as the work follows the manufacturer's service schedule, uses parts of suitable quality and the service is recorded. Keep your invoices and make sure the service book or digital record is updated. Warranty terms differ, so if you have a manufacturer-backed or extended warranty, check its own conditions first. We cannot give legal advice, but we are happy to talk through what your service should include.
Yes. We service, repair and diagnose Alfa Romeos across the range, from older cars such as the 147, 156-era models, 159, Brera and GT through MiTo and Giulietta to Giulia, Stelvio and Tonale. If your model is unusual, such as a 4C, call us on 07746 922 273 before booking so we can talk it through.
It depends on the engine and model year. Many Alfa petrol and diesel engines use a cambelt, and the replacement interval is set by both mileage and age, whichever comes first. Check the schedule for your exact engine, or tell us the registration and engine size and we will confirm what applies. Where the belt is replaced we normally recommend the water pump is done at the same time, because it is driven by the same belt and most of the labour is shared.
MultiAir engines use engine oil as the working fluid in the valve actuation system, so the oil grade and approval matter more than on a conventional engine. We use oil matched to the manufacturer specification for your car and change it on time. Short trips and long gaps between services are the usual way this oil gets tired.
For a straightforward oil and filter service, our oil service while you wait is quoted at under 60 minutes with a waiting area on site. A full or major service takes longer and we will tell you the timing when you book.
We do not test MOTs ourselves. We can arrange it with the test centre on our street, pre-check the car first and fix anything that fails. You can combine it with a service.
