What to know about the 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic in a Mercedes E-Class

  • The W212 article's transmission tables list the 7G-Tronic on 2009–2011 petrols and diesels and the 7G-Tronic Plus on 2011–2014 cars. Both are 722.9 gearboxes.[1]
  • The W213 article says all engines except the AMG V8 come with the 9G-Tronic as standard. The E 53 and E 63 use AMG SPEEDSHIFT gearboxes instead.[3]
  • The W212 E 63 AMG is also a different gearbox: the article describes it with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT seven-speed rather than the 7G-Tronic.[1]

What the service includes

Static service, from £399:

  • Road test with live data before we start and again before handover
  • Pan off and filter renewed where the design allows, with a new seal and bolts where specified
  • The fluid specified for your gearbox, by part number — the 7G-Tronic and 9G-Tronic take different fluids
  • Level set by the method the gearbox calls for, with the fluid at the specified temperature read from live data
  • Adaptations reset, leak check, and the work recorded against your car

Dynamic fluid exchange, from £799: everything above, plus our machine connected into the cooler circuit to renew the fluid in the torque converter and cooler circuit, not just what drains from the pan. Dynamic exchange prices and booking · How the dynamic exchange works →

Each step is explained on our Mercedes 7G-Tronic (722.9) and 9G-Tronic (725.0) gearbox service page.

The Rootes Standard

What you get on every job

Not extras, and not only on the big jobs. This is how every car is looked after at Rootes Motors, from an oil service to a gearbox.

  1. Fixed price in writing before we start

You get a fixed price in writing before any work begins. If we find anything else, we send you photos and a link to approve or decline it — nothing extra is done without your yes.

  2. 12-month warranty on parts we supply

12-month warranty on parts we supply (wear items and consumables excluded), and every job is road-tested and checked before handover.

  3. Covers on, clean overalls, every car

A seat cover, steering-wheel cover and floor mat go into every car before we touch it, and we work in clean overalls — never in a customer's car in dirty clothes.

  4. A warm, dry waiting room with coffee

On a while-you-wait job you sit in a warm, dry waiting room with a coffee — not stood outside in the cold and rain.

  5. Paperless, with every job on record

Booking is paperless. Every job is recorded against your car, and we email you the documents confirming the work completed.

  6. Automatic service and MOT reminders

Every registered customer gets automatic service and MOT reminders by email, so a due date never slips past.

  7. MOT arranged on our street

We arrange your MOT at the DVSA-approved test centre on our street, take the car there and back, and fix anything that fails.

Questions we get asked

Which gearbox does my E-Class have?

W212 cars (2009–2016) have the seven-speed 7G-Tronic or 7G-Tronic Plus; W213 cars (2016 on) have the nine-speed 9G-Tronic. AMG models are different. Send us your registration and we confirm it before quoting.

How often should an E-Class gearbox service be done?

Our own advice is around every 60,000 miles on average, sooner for cars that tow or are driven hard. If the history is unknown, do it now.

What is the difference between a static service and a dynamic exchange on an E-Class?

The static service drains and refills with a new filter. The dynamic exchange also renews the fluid held in the torque converter and cooler. We recommend one for your car after reading its live data.

How much is a Mercedes 7G/9G-Tronic gearbox service on a Mercedes E-Class?

A static service (drain and fill, level set at the correct fluid temperature) is from £399, and a dynamic fluid exchange on our machine is from £799, both priced to your car. The price moves with which Mercedes 7G/9G-Tronic version it has, the pan and filter part and how much has to come off to reach it. Give us your registration and we confirm a fixed price in writing before we start.
