Find the fails before the test

The MOT tester works from the DVSA's MOT inspection manual. Our pre-MOT check goes through the same sections of that manual, item by item, so you find out what would fail before the car is tested, not after.

What we check

The check follows the manual's own sections and numbering:

  • Identification of the vehicle
  • Brakes
  • Steering
  • Visibility
  • Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment
  • Axles, wheels, tyres and suspension
  • Body, structure and attachments
  • Other equipment
  • Nuisance (including emissions and noise)
  • Seat belt installation checks

Every item is graded in MOT language: Pass, Advisory, Minor, Major or Dangerous.

What you get

  • A pass or fail-style result. "Would pass", or "Would fail" with the number of major and dangerous items.
  • Every fail item priced before any work. Anything graded Major or Dangerous comes to you as a priced line. You approve or decline it online, and we don't start until you have.
  • Advisories and minors written down, so you can plan for them rather than be surprised.
  • A printed copy of the check if you want one.

Separate from the free health check

Every visit already includes our free health check of the car's general condition. The pre-MOT check is a different job: a separate, paid service that works through the MOT inspection manual itself.

How it fits with MOT arranged

We're not a DVSA test centre and we don't carry out the MOT. The test is done by an approved centre on our street. If you want the MOT too, tell us when you book: we run the pre-MOT check, take the car to the test centre, and fix anything that fails. How MOT arranged works.

Price

£49, fixed, for the check. Any work it finds is priced separately and only done once you've approved it. The MOT fee is the test centre's, separate from anything we charge.

The Rootes Standard

What you get on every job

Not extras, and not only on the big jobs. This is how every car is looked after at Rootes Motors, from an oil service to a gearbox.

  1. Fixed price in writing before we start

You get a fixed price in writing before any work begins. If we find anything else, we send you photos and a link to approve or decline it — nothing extra is done without your yes.

  2. 12-month warranty on parts we supply

12-month warranty on parts we supply (wear items and consumables excluded), and every job is road-tested and checked before handover.

  3. Covers on, clean overalls, every car

A seat cover, steering-wheel cover and floor mat go into every car before we touch it, and we work in clean overalls — never in a customer's car in dirty clothes.

  4. A warm, dry waiting room with coffee

On a while-you-wait job you sit in a warm, dry waiting room with a coffee — not stood outside in the cold and rain.

  5. Paperless, with every job on record

Booking is paperless. Every job is recorded against your car, and we email you the documents confirming the work completed.

  6. Automatic service and MOT reminders

Every registered customer gets automatic service and MOT reminders by email, so a due date never slips past.

  7. MOT arranged on our street

We arrange your MOT at the DVSA-approved test centre on our street, take the car there and back, and fix anything that fails.

We quote it before we touch it.

Questions we get asked

Is the pre-MOT check the MOT?

No. We don't carry out the MOT ourselves. The test is done by a DVSA-approved test centre on the same street as us. The pre-MOT check is our own check against the same inspection manual, so you know what would fail before the car goes in.

Does a pre-MOT check mean my car will pass?

No. Only the MOT tester can pass a car. The check tells you what we found against the manual, so the car goes in with the fails we found already priced or fixed.

How is it different from the free health check?

The free health check comes with every visit and looks at the car's general condition. The pre-MOT check is a separate £49 service that goes through the MOT inspection manual's sections item by item and grades each one the way a tester would.

What happens if something would fail?

Every item that would fail is priced and sent to you before we do any work. You approve the job or decline it. Nothing is done without your say-so.

Can you book the MOT for me as well?

Yes. Tell us when you book. We take the car to the test centre on our street, and if anything fails we quote, fix it and get it back for a retest. See MOT arranged for how that works.
